Enlightened Moderation in Holy Quran and Hadiths

Mirza Rohail B and Afreen Baig

The world has been going through a tumultuous period since the dawn of the 1990s, with no sign of relief in sight.  The suffering of the innocents, particularly my brethren in faith — the Muslims — at the hands of militants, extremists and terrorists has made it all the more urgent to bring order to this troubled scene. In this spirit, I would like to set forth a strategy I call Enlightened Moderation – General Pervez Musharraf

Enlighten in Holy Quran

(1) Then if they reject thee, so were rejected apostles before thee, who came with Clear Signs, Books of dark prophecies, and the Book of enlightenment.
(  سورة آل عمران  , Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #184)

(2) We have made the Night and the Day as two (of Our) Signs: the Sign of the Night have We obscured, while the Sign of the Day We have made to enlighten you; that ye may seek bounty from your Lord, and that ye may know the number and count of the years: all things have We explained in detail.
(  سورة الإسراء  , Al-Isra, Chapter #17, Verse #12)

(3) Yet there is among men such a one as disputes about Allah, without Knowledge, without Guidance, and without a Book of enlightenment,-
(  سورة الحج  , Al-Hajj, Chapter #22, Verse #8)

(4) Say: See ye? If Allah were to make the night perpetual over you to the Day of Judgment, what god is there other than Allah, who can give you enlightenment? Will ye not then hearken?
(  سورة القصص  , Al-Qasas, Chapter #28, Verse #71)

(5) Do ye not see that Allah has subjected to your (use) all things in the heavens and on earth, and has made his bounties flow to you in exceeding measure, (both) seen and unseen? Yet there are among men those who dispute about Allah, without knowledge and without guidance, and without a Book to enlighten them!
(  سورة لقمان  , Luqman, Chapter #31, Verse #20)

(6) And if they reject thee, so did their predecessors, to whom came their apostles with Clear Signs, Books of dark prophecies, and the Book of enlightenment.
(  سورة فاطر  , Fatir, Chapter #35, Verse #25)

(7) Is one whose heart Allah has opened to Islam, so that he has received enlightenment from Allah, (no better than one hard-hearted)? Woe to those whose hearts are hardened against celebrating the praises of Allah. they are manifestly wandering (in error)!
(  سورة الزمر  , Az-Zumar, Chapter #39, Verse #22)

(8) And its enlightenment as to its wrong and its right
(  سورة الشمس  , Ash-Shams, Chapter #91, Verse #8)

Moderate in Holy Quran

(1) “And be Moderate in thy pace, and lower thy voice; for the harshest of sounds without doubt is the braying of the ass.”
( Luqman, Chapter #31, Verse #19)

(2) And if they had kept up the Taurat and the Injeel and that which was revealed to them from their Lord, they would certainly have eaten from above them and from beneath their feet there is a party of them keeping to the Moderate course, and (as for) most of them, evil is that which they do …
(  سورة المائدة  , Al-Maeda, Chapter #5, Verse #66)

(3) Say: O followers of the Book! be not unduly imModerate in your religion, and do not follow the low desires of people who went astray before and led many astray and went astray from the right path.
(  سورة المائدة  , Al-Maeda, Chapter #5, Verse #77)

Moderate in Hadiths

(1) Narrated Abu Huraira: I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “The good deeds of any person will not make him enter Paradise.” (i.e., None can enter Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet’s companions) said, ‘Not even you, O Allah’s Apostle?’ He said, “Not even myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me.” So be Moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability: and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to Allah.”  (Book #70, Hadith #577) (Sahih Bukhari)

(2) Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Apostle said, “The deeds of anyone of you will not save you (from the (Hell) Fire).” They said, “Even you (will not be saved by your deeds), O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, “No, even I (will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me. Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and Moderately, and worship Allah in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, Moderate, regular course whereby you will reach your target (Paradise).”  (Book #76, Hadith #470) (Sahih Bukhari)

(3) Narrated ‘Aisha: Allah’s Apostle said, “Do good deeds properly, sincerely and Moderately and know that your deeds will not make you enter Paradise, and that the most beloved deed to Allah’s is the most regular and constant even though it were little.”  (Book #76, Hadith #471) (Sahih Bukhari)

(4) Narrated ‘Aisha: The Prophet said, “Do good deeds properly, sincerely and Moderately, and receive good news because one’s good deeds will not make him enter Paradise.” They asked, “Even you, O Allah’s Apostle?” He said, “Even I, unless and until Allah bestows His pardon and Mercy on me.”  (Book #76, Hadith #474) (Sahih Bukhari)

(5) Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Good way, dignified good bearing and Moderation are the twenty-fifth part of Prophecy.  (Book #41, Hadith #4758) (Sunan Abudawud)

(6) Narrated Amr ibn al-‘As: One day when a man got up and spoke at length Amr ibn al-‘As said If he had been Moderate in what he said: It would have been better for him. I heard the Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) say: I think (or, I have been commanded) that I should be brief in what I say, for brevity is better.  (Book #41, Hadith #4990) (Sunan Abudawud)

(7) Jabir b. Samura reported: I used to observe prayer with the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and his prayer was of Moderate length and his sermon too was of Moderate length.  (Book #004, Hadith #1884) (Sahih Muslim)

(8) Masruq reported: We went to Abdullah b. ‘Amr when Mu’dwiya came to Kufa, and he made a mention of Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) and said: He was never immoderate in his talk and he never reviled others. Allah’s Messenger (may peace be upon him) also said: The best amongst you are those who are best in morals. Uthman said: When he came to Kufa along with Mu’awiya… (The rest of the hadith is the same).  (Book #030, Hadith #5740) (Sahih Muslim)
